Maryland Municipal Government Week Celebrated in April
The Maryland Municipal League and its member 157 cities and towns around
the State celebrated the annual Municipal Government Week (April 22-26th)
called Building Inclusive Communities. This weeklong event has been held
since 1993 in an effort to promote citizens awareness of and interest in
the government in their communities. As the level of government closest
to the people, local government offers its citizens the best opportunity
to be heard and to influence the course of our communities. But self-governance
is inherently dependent on the awareness of citizens and the level of commitment
they have to participating in government. [Ray Remy, former Deputy Mayor
of the City of Los Angeles and President of the Institute for Local Self
Government]

restoration, will be acted on by the State Board of Public Works at its

Stone Wall and Sidewalk Repair/Reconstruction on Market St.
by Resident Master Mason Dave Yinger
Dave Yinger, long time resident and award-winning brick mason, took on
an ancient and crumbling stone wall along the lower part of Market Street
and not only repaired and finished off the wall, he re laid the adjoining
brick sidewalk. If you'd like to see excellent craftsmanship and volunteer
work at its best (Dave spent almost two full weeks - journeyman building
trade workers start early and finish late), take a walk down to 204 Market
Street and look at the wall and sidewalk at the Evans house. Thanks Dave
for another great job for our Town.
Town Budget for 2002-2003
The Town Commissioners and the Clerk-Treasurer are working on a new budget
for the coming 2002-2003 fiscal year. The budget will be presented and
discussed at the Annual Town Meeting on May 21.
Brookeville Academy News
Use of the Brookeville Academy has steadily picked up after a discernible
economic slowdown attributable to the 9-11 events of last year. Customers,
both private parties and nonprofit organizations and community-based groups,
continue to compliment the facility for its ease of use and its attractive
scale and ambience. Fresh painting will be underway soon on portions of
the exterior and the downstairs meeting room on the inside. Some repair
work on the stucco walls will be completed. Explanatory signs for the Brookeville
Angel and the Newlin Millstone are being designed as well.
Planning Commission Meets on Sheahin Preliminary Subdivision
The Brookeville Planning Commission met with the architect and engineers
planning the subdivision that will be developed next to the Salem Church
Cemetery. The discussions centered on various ways of placing the proposed
residences on this gateway to the town parcel. The Planning Commission
agreed to a name for the street associated with this project - First Street
and a name for a previously approved Rotter subdivision street - Water
Street.
